Henry Miller’s debut revelled in a Paris underworld of sex and changed the course of the novel – though not without a fight with the censors. Tropic of Cancer is an autobiographical and was first published in 1934 by the Obelisk Press in Paris, France, which was banned in the United States. Its publication in 1961 in the United States by Grove Press led to obscenity trials that tested American laws on pornography in the early 1960s. As seen being read and admired by Griffin Dunne’s and Rosanna Arquette’s characters in the Scorsese film After Hours.

We’ve got two beautifully designed copies of this classic piece of 20th century literature, put out by Panther Books in the UK.
