Miracle of the Rose by Jean Genet
Miracle of the Rose by Jean Genet
Scarce edition of Genet's classic, Miracle of the Rose, his 1946 book is about experiences as a detainee in Mettray Penal Colony and Fontevrault prison.
The book also heavily inspired The Pogues and their frontman Shane MacGowan, the song 'Hell's Ditch', the title track from their 1990 album, is based largely on the life and writings of Genet, in particular Miracle of the Rose and Our Lady of the Flowers, with its depictions of prison life.
This is also another perfect example of the fine work done by Evergreen Black Cat. Launched in 1961 by Grove press the new Imprint was named Black Cat after a night club in Frankfurt, with a focus on sixties underground counter cultural and political movements.
